| Historians disagree about the exact date of the arrival of the Utban or Bani-Utbah in Kuwait. The Utban, who are a clan of the Anaza tribe to which Al-Sabah belong. Al Utbah tribe fled to State of Kuwait away from the terrible drought which perished the Arab Peninsula. They chose Sabah bin Jaber as their governor in 1756 to administer justice and the affairs of the town, and settle the disputes of its inhabitants. As time passed, the small town of Kuwait benefited from its location overlooking the head of the Arabian Gulf and thrived through trade, fishing and pearl fishery. Hence, Kuwait became one of the most prosperous countries in the region. Since 1756, fourteen rulers from Al Sabah family ruled Kuwait. There have since been 14 rulers of Kuwait form the Al-Sabah family according to the following chronological order : 1 Sheikh Sabah I bin Jaber 1756 - 1762 2 Sheikh Abdallah I 1765 - 1812 3 Sheikh Jaber I812 - 1859 4 Sheikh Sabah II 1859 - 1866 5 Sheikh Abdallah II 1866 - 1892 6 Sheikh Muhammad I 1892 - 1896 7 Sheikh Mubarak Al Sabah 1896 - 1915 8 Sheikh Jaber II 1915 - 1917 9 Sheikh Salem Al Mubarak 1917 - 1921 10 Sheikh Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah 1921 - 1950 11 Sheikh Abdallah Al Salem Al Sabah 1950 - 1965 12 Sheikh Sabah Al Salem Al Sabah 1965 - 1977 13 Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah 1977 - 2006 14 Sheikh Saad Al Abdullah Al Salem Al Sabah: 2006 In 2006, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, may Allah protect him, became the ruler of Kuwait until the present time. |
