A royal preoccupation since time immemorial and used as a symbol of a monarch's courage and power, hunting was frequently represented in Islamic art. This tinted album drawing is representative of the style favoured in the Murghal court, particularly during the first quarter of the seventeenth century under the patronage of Jahangir. The diagonal composition and energetic movement of the hunters and their prey create a vitality that contrasts to the subtle palette and sparse details rendered in colour.
