The final development in Iznic ceramics is the appearance of a bright and thick red, first employed in the tiles of the Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul completed in 1557. Together with an emerald green, it was applied to a variety of objects, including single-handed jugs, such as this example. Sinuous branches bearing large blossoms and buds alternating with elegantly twisting serrated leaves decorate the body and neck. The elements are freely drawn and naturalistically rendered, creating a harmony of design and movement.
